Key trends spring summer 2008

Time for tea

If you buy one thing this summer make it a ditzy print tea dress. Everyone can wear this fun fresh trend. Think floral print dresses with a puff sleeve or row or little buttons. A small print can be worn by anyone. If you don’t feel ready to wear print, another way to interpret the trend is by accessorising your outfit with a floral corsage, be first one before the sex and the city movie hits the screens (We will all be doing it then!)

Barely there

Sheers and nudes featured heavily on the catwalks, neither is an easy trend to wear but can be translated easily to your everyday wardrobe, try chiffon layered over heavier fabrics, for a flirty romantic look. When wearing nude shades go for a palette of soft pinks, rather than flesh tones. Cinch in your outfit with a waisted belt to give a stronger, more flattering silhouette.

Shoes

Anything goes this season; shoes for summer are colourful and crazy. Patent leather, carved heels, sky-high platforms and chunky wedges in all the colours of the rainbow. Adorned with bows, flowers, studs and gems.

This is a great trend for anyone as you can instantly and easily update your look by adding a great pair of heels. Go for wedges if you’re not confident in really high heels. When comfort and practicality wins over fashion (as occasionally it does!) choose gladiator styles flats, with some diamante or beading for a touch of glamour.

Go Global

This season, designers showed strong ethnic influenced collections, with a focus on strong bold tribal prints in bright colours. Other details included tie-die fabrics, kimono sleeves, feathers and animal prints. Leopard print features heavily again for summer. This is not a look to wear head to toe. Try a printed dress or top worn with plainer accessories. Or choose an animal printed scarf or handbag. Jewellery is bold and inspired by crafts featuring chunky painted bangles and wooden beaded necklaces.

Americana

Another strong trend to emerge for summer had a retro Americana feel. Including plaid fabrics, star and stripe prints in a strong palette of red white and blue. Team these with faded denim or easier to wear indigo for a great up to the minute look. Jeans and trousers had high waistbands, great for hiding muffin tops and creating a beautiful hourglass shape.

All Greek

Designers showed gorgeous draped jersey dresses this season in soft flowing fabrics. This is a really wearable trend, great for updating your work wardrobe. The loose soft shapes can be given structure with a cinched waisted belt or worn under a fitted jacket. Choose flattering light summery shades in soft blues and eau de nil.

Menswear

Americana

Like womenswear this season menswear takes inspiration from the 50s and all things American, not a look to wear top to toe, but a plaid shirt or vintage leather jacket can inject a fresh retro feel into classic jeans and t-shirt.

Surfs up dude

A relaxed 70s surfer trend emerged, great for lazy summer days. Think lightweight washed out fabrics and loose easy fit clothes with graphic patterns. Vintage faded cotton and linen items look great and are really practical for when the weather warms up.

Brights

Bright colours are everywhere. Be as bold as you dare, with vivid pinks oranges blues even yellow. Add a splash of colour to an outfit with a bright shirt or tie. Wear one colour at a time and mix with plainer items, bold colours look great with white or grey for summer.

The long and the short of it

City shorts were worn on the catwalk with a shirt and jacket for a smart bold look. This trend is really only for the brave! Tailored shorts can defiantly be worn for smarter occasions, when teamed with a shirt, leave the tie and blazer at home to avoid the schoolboy look. Wear shorts tailored and to the knee in navy blue, olive, or sludgy browns.

The classics

Always invest in a great pair of sunglasses, shoes and watch, choose classic items that will last. A lightweight trench coat is a great stylish addition to any wardrobe. Choose black, navy or slate grey, which can be worn from season to season.
